BLAZES: Berkeley Lab Adventure Zone for Elementary Science

Program Description

BLAZES is a structured program for 5th graders with alignment to the CA Science Standards.

Students will:

  • participate in group hands-on activities
  • investigate the Periodic Table (need link)
  • interact with scientists
  • learn about careers in science, engineering and technology
  • visit a laboratory to see powerful imaging instruments used in research
  • see a liquid nitrogen demonstration explaining concepts in earlier activities

Audience

  • Fifth grade school classes in the greater Bay Area
  • Target audiences are public schools from the Berkeley, Oakland and West Contra Costa districts
  • One adult chaperone required for each eight students
  • Class or group size limited to 32 students

Requesting a Visit

  • Programs scheduled beginning in September each year 
  • Visits scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays 
  • When a request for a visit has been received and scheduled, a Visit Request Form must be completed and returned to CSEE

Preparation/
Expectations

  • Review the packet of information including:
    • science content ideas for preparing students for the visit
    • safety regulations for students and adults during the visit
    • post-visit activities
  • After your visit, complete the provided student and teacher evaluation forms and send to CSEE
